How to Build a Website Without HTML Know-How

Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML, is a markup language used to create websites. While it is useful to have some familiarity with HTML coding when creating a website for your online business, you can still build a website without HTML know-how by using site creation software such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage. These applications have user-friendly ‘WYSIWYG’ interfaces that allow you to design the site visually so you can see how it is going to turn out before uploading it. You can also download free site creation applications, such as NVU, if you’re on a budget.
The first step in designing your website is deciding what content, such as text, titles and graphics, you want to appear on the web pages. Then make a sketch of the site on a piece of paper so you can see where the different elements will appear on the pages. Do you want two or three columns on your website? Where will you put the buttons? What about graphics? Are the different elements in balance? Once you have finalized the design, you can input the information into the site builder application’s interface to create the site.
You’ll have to import the graphics and pictures you want to appear on your site, since they cannot be embedded directly onto the web pages. Before uploading pictures on to your website, you’ll want to edit them to make it faster for the page to load by using image editing software. Resample each of the digital pictures to a resolution of around 72 dots per inch (dpi). You can also use the editing software to retouch the pictures to make them look more attractive.
Finally, once all the elements are in place on your website, preview them on several web browser programs to make sure the site will appear online the way you want it to. Then, upload it onto your Internet web host.
You can also build a website without HTML by signing up with sites that offer you a combination of domain registration, web hosting and site creation software for a monthly fee. The advantage of going this route is that you will have all the technical support you need to create your website. You also have the option of using one of their pre-designed templates and then just customizing it for your own needs. If you run into any problems that require HTML code, you can usually find the relevant code by doing an online search; just paste it onto the HTML editor.
You can also build a website without HTML by signing up with free web hosting sites and using their site building tools. Their applications are easy to use, utilizing an interface similar to that of word processing programs. This is advisable if you’re just starting out in your Internet venture and you have no HTML knowledge. A free web hosting solution also usually allows you to use your domain name on their site, although some may charge you an additional fee to do so. However, there are many limitations when you’re using a free web host which could affect your ranking in search engines, so you may eventually have to shift to a paid web hosting solution when your business takes off.

To Succeed as an Affiliate, You Need to Build a Website That Allows Others to Sell Their Stuff

One of the most effective ways to make money online is by signing up with an affiliate program. Being an affiliate essentially means that you are acting as a go-between for a vendor who is selling certain products or services. When visitors come to your website, you direct them to the merchant site, and then you get paid a commission every time they make a purchase or sign up for a special offer. To become an affiliate, you need to build a website that allows others to sell their stuff.
There are several types of affiliate programs. While most programs pay you a one-time commission on sales, others offer a lifetime commission, in which you are paid again whenever a customer you referred makes another purchase. There are also two or three-tier affiliate programs that not only pay you for making sales but also for recruiting others to do the same; you will then earn a share of the sales they generate. An alternative to joining sales-based affiliate programs is Google AdSense, an affiliate program that places ads on your site and then pays you whenever someone clicks on the ad’s link. The advantage of the AdSense program is that advertisements are directly related to the content on your site, so visitors are more likely to click on the links.
Before signing up with an affiliate program, you should build a website that allows others to sell their stuff that has useful and unique content on it that reflects your particular interests. You have to make your site search-engine friendly by making sure its content includes the most-often searched keywords or terms so that it would rank high on search engine results; search engines are the best way to generate directed traffic to your site. Finally, sign up with affiliate programs that reflect your particular niche, i.e. if you like books, then you can sign up for an affiliate program that sells e-books or audiobooks.
Then you should get your site listed on Google, Yahoo! and other major search engines. You can do this by submitting your URL either to The Open Directory or directly to the search engines; there are no guarantees, however, that they will list your site, particularly if you’re using a free website host. A more effective method of getting listed is by getting your site linked to another site or web directory that is already listed by the search engines.
If you don’t have a website, the affiliate company will build a website that allows others to sell their stuff for you, as well as providing you with marketing and promotional support; all you have to do is create the content that will generate traffic to your site. If you don’t have enough content available, you can get some free articles from article directories; but avoid overdoing this since search engines penalize sites with too much duplicate content. If you have the resources, you can also consider including videos on your site, and then placing keywords in the meta tags.

Tips on How to Build a Website Sales Page and Thank You Web Page

If you want to sell products online, you will have to build a website sales page and thank you web page on your site. Note that if your website is hosted on a free host service you may not qualify to sign up with many online vendor programs, so you will have to invest money in registering your own personal domain name and in paying for web hosting with a commercial service. You must also create the pages first before you can be approved by the vendor for entry to the sales program.
The sales page, which is also known as the pitch page, must contain the following elements: detailed information on the product you’re selling, including the price and product features, and delivery details (i.e. method of delivery and how long it will take); if it is a recurring-billing product, include details of the rebilling schedule, such as the frequency of billing and how many times the customer will be billed. You should also inform customers if the product can only be used in a particular country or region. Of course, you must include a payment link that will direct customers to an online form where they can place their orders.
The thank you page appears after the customer has bought the product and payment has been approved; it should have the same look as the rest of the site in order to reassure customers that they have not done something wrong. The thank you page confirms that the purchase or subscription has been successfully completed and that their credit card or bank account will show a charge; it should also tell the customer what to expect (i.e. that you’ll be sending them a confirmatory e-mail) and what, if anything, they should do next (click on the link to start downloading the digital product). The page should also include a link that that brings them back to the home page, and a valid e-mail, toll-free number or other method by which they can contact you if they have any concerns.
You might also consider monetizing the thank you page by including ads for related products you think the customer might be interested in, or links that they can click to bring them to other sales pages.
You can build a website sales page and thank you web page by yourself using a template; pre-designed templates, however, might give your web pages a generic look, so if you can afford it, you might want to hire a web designer to give the pages a more professional look. If you’re doing it yourself, you can load the template into web editing software that allows you to use simple text rather than HTML.
Finally, keep in mind that the success of your online ventures rests on the effectiveness of your sales page. So when you build a website sales page and thank you web page make sure that they capture the attention of customers and, when they buy something, leave them feeling satisfied and more likely to deal with you again.

Affiliate Marketing Dead? Discover the Truth

By: Kounio Kostov
Word Count: 717

I'll get straight to the point. A lot of aspiring affiliate marketers (and even some more experienced ones) have heard from "experts" about the tragic passing of http://affiliatemoneyathome.com/ Unfortunately, it seems they hear about the tragic news right after they have started to really believe they can make some money with affiliate marketing. I understand why many of these marketers are frantically posting the question "Is affiliate marketing dead" in many forums.

You probably already know that some of these "experts" aren't even experts at all. They are trying to use this as a scare tactic to try to lure you into buying one of their products. If you are one of these marketers that have fallen victim to this rumor I want you to do me a favor. Take a deep breath and relax. Affiliate marketing isn't going anywhere. Below are the 5 reasons that support this fact.

The Recession - I know you are probably thinking, "Isn't the fact there is a recession going on more of a reason to think affiliate marketing is dead"? I am sure there were marketers out there promoting certain products that felt a pinch in their wallet. However, because of the economy, this is the best time to get into affiliate marketing. Why? It is because it opens up new markets with new products that weren't in demand before.

Fortune 500 Companies Still Have Affiliate Programs - I think we can all agree that these guys are the reason we have a job as affiliate marketers, right? I think we can also agree these companies put a lot of time and money into doing market research. I am sure they can predict what people will be buying 10 (or more) years from now. If they felt affiliate marketing is dead (or going to die), don't you think they would have pulled the plug on their affiliate programs a long time ago?

The New FTC Regulations - I think the new regulations are one of the main reasons marketers (recently) started to panic.I will admit I was one of them. I couldn't comprehend how I would possibly be able to make any sales with disclaimers posted all over my site. Then I came to my senses.

First, I realized if the FTC thought affiliate marketing was coming to a halt, they wouldn't have spent the time and money to come up with these regulations. Secondly, these regulations help separate the honest marketers from the scammers. With these new regulations in place, it will open up a lot of doors for both new and veteran affiliate marketers.

Shopping Online is in Demand - Let's face it...People like to be able to sit in the comfort of their own home, shop from almost any store, easily compare prices , avoid long check out lanes, and not have to worry about taking their kids out. I don't have ESP, but I don't foresee millions of people giving up the ability to shop with the click of a button any time soon. So as long as people are wanting to buy products online, companies are going to sell online. Basically it all comes down to what customers want...and they are king.

New Products Are Being Made Every Day - A lot of marketers think affiliate marketing is dying because there is too much competition. Yes, there are some markets that are more saturated than others. Because there are new companies forming and new products being made each day, there is always room for more affiliate marketers. In fact, due to the economy affiliate marketers are needed now more than ever.

I hope this article has put your mind at ease. I hope it has also reassured you there is a lot of money to be made with affiliate marketing. Using this method of marketing your business on the internet is inexpensive and does not require a lot of your valuable time. Read this article and it will explain some helpful methods you can use to write a good newsletter.

Use a newsletter for keeping your customers up to date and informed about new and existing products and services that you have to offer. This is a useful way of keeping in regular contact with your customers, it is also a good way of keeping your customers interested in your site by way of offerings and promotion material.

Your online newsletter can also show your customers that you are an expert in your topic. If you show your customers how expert you are they will be more likely purchase what you have to offer. If they make a purchase and are pleased with the product or service they are more likely to return and buy more of your products.

Another benefit of a satisfied customer is that they will tell their friends and relations about your product and website, and they could well become another subscriber to your email list. This will help build your email opt in list and so expand your customer base.

It maybe a little difficult when you first start, but it does get easier as you go along. Do not be put off by your first attempt at writing a good newsletter, be persistent and keep trying, you will improve.

Here are five helpful tips you might want to consider when writing your opt in newsletter:

1. Your content is very important for your newsletter, it should be relevant to your topic. It should be fresh and well written, it should use correct grammar correct sentence formation and correct spelling. It should contain interesting and valuable information about your product, it should describe your product in plain simple language.

Remember that once you have lost your customers you will never get them back. Also the customers that you did have will tell other potential customers about your lack of honesty and you will lose them as well.

3. Proof read your articles, make sure they are correct in every respect. A good idea is to get another person to read your article back to you to make sure that it reads properly. Another idea is to get somebody that has a lot of experience in reading and writing English to a high standard, and asking them to proof read your internet newsletter for you.

4. Never use material that is in copyright, such as graphics or articles. This is illegal and could leave you open to being sued for copyright infringement. Apart from the legal aspect you could lose your online business and be banned from running a business on the internet.

5. If you can not write your own articles, there are plenty of ghost writers you can hire on the internet, that will do the job for you for a fee. Remember to do some research to make sure you have hired a reputable writer.

There's no need for you to develop or carry the product. One doesn't even have to know that much about the product, since the customer will be going to another website where all the important data is presented.

Any good affiliate program will give all of the materials you need to advertise them. Generally this includes emails, banners, text links, and free ebooks that you can use on your website. Training and techniques for endorsing the websites are even presented by those affiliate programs that are really good.

Getting traffic to your site and getting people to click on the links of the affiliates is all you have to do when you sign in an affiliate program. Hopefully, a sale will be generated, and you will be earning money.

The downside of promoting affiliate programs, is that you are competing with other individuals to get sales. Classical Guitar Technique: Produce Tones Like the Masters

By: Emre Sabuncuoglu
Word Count: 595

Guitarists, are you wondering how to make your instrument produce the kinds of tones that stir listeners' emotions? If so, you will want to take a look at the classical guitar technique that the world's best classical guitar players use to make their music thrill audiences.

A stellar operatic tenor makes his living by producing tones that send fans into shivers of ecstasy. If his voice were hoarse or scratchy, he would never inspire his listeners. Good tone production is what sets apart the average singer from the virtuoso. Similarly, a skilled musician playing the classical guitar works toward producing the best possible tone quality with his right hand. He attempts to refine his tone to the point where no coarseness or impurity remains. Thus, the player conceives of a beautiful tone in his own mind, then tries to duplicate the tone’s elusive quality on the classical guitar.

In playing the classical guitar, the musician uses his or her fingernails to produce the tone, since using the nails generates brilliance and a plethora of tone colors. The nail tone that the finest concert guitarists produce is clear, round, sweet, and ethereal in character. It has no harshness, scratchiness, thumps, or clicks. This tone can completely enthrall both player and listener. Each and every guitarist should aim for such a magnificent, flawless sound. Do not be content until the sounds that come from your guitar have that elusive quality that you hear from the best artists in the genre. Experiment with your tone until you obtain the sound that you so desire. Remember, even in the top dynamic range, the tone should still be sweet and airy.

To produce such a tone, first get a clear concept of an ideal tone in your mind. The best way to get this concept is to listen to one of the gorgeous tones produced by a virtuoso classical guitar player, either live, recorded, or in online classical guitar lessons. Listen again and again, each time trying to hear more of the tone’s subtle qualities. When you have a clear concept of the sound, try to produce the same quality on your own classical guitar. You will find it easier, because you will have already heard how the tone should sound, from one of the art’s masters. From a technical perspective, executing the right-hand strokes correctly will also boost the quality of your tone production. Use both methods to hone your skills in this most important dimension of classical guitar technique.

Since tone quality is so crucial to your development as a classical guitar artist, make this exercise just as important to your daily routine as practicing scales. You, too, can take your musicianship to the next level by careful attention to tone production. Online classical guitar lessons can help, too, as can taking lessons in a studio.

When choosing a studio or an online classical guitar lessons program, make sure that the instructors themselves produce tones that move their listeners’ hearts. Look at reviews from their concerts, and listen to their recorded works. In addition, they should have enough teaching experience to have a track record with respect to the quality of students they produce. Finally, be sure that the teachers have an engaging manner which enables them to explain the material to their students clearly, using the student’s own preferred learning style. Choose wisely, and you will be producing the kinds of tones that move your listeners’ hearts as well.
If you are looking for a studio to help you hone your classical guitar technique, or if you want to begin online classical guitar lessons, Los Angeles Guitar Academy would be a great place to start. With internationally-acclaimed performers on their faculty, LAGA specializes in the art of the classical guitar.

5 Inexpensive Resources To Learn Animation, Game Design and Comic Art

By: Inger Fountain
Word Count: 596

Animation, Computer Game Design and Comic Art are three of the most wonderful expressions of art that speak to the child in all of us. They can tell stories so simple or so rich and complex that they can engage an audience no matter how old or young.

With technology the way it is animation, game design and comic art education is accessible like never before. You don't need to do a sixty thousand dollar arts course to be inspired and educated by the best in the world and make something of your own to share with the world.

If you are interested in any of these creative pursuits or would like to encourage someone you know who is interested here are a few mind-blowing resources to inspire and guide creation.

1. Instructional DVDs From Gnomon Workshop
These DVDs have been professionally put together by artists who work in the fields of traditional and computer generated art, and the range of subjects and tutors increases every year. You can learn all about animation, digital painting, storyboarding, game design, character modelling, conceptual art and more from noted contributors that will teach and inspire you to create.

2. Drawn To Life
This book is a compilation of class notes written by Walt Stanchfield and distributed to animators in training at Disney's CALARTS college during a thirty year period. Hands down it is the most inspiring book on not only the technique of animation but an artistic approach to life. Volume one is essential and leads into volume two which I would recommend if you can afford.

3. Imaginative Realism: How To Paint What Doesn't Exist
James Gurney is most famous for his Dinotopia series of books. He has also been contributing to the world of art knowledge regularly on his Blog The Gurney Journey for some years now. This book is a compilation of the best of that Blog and also a few extras. It is a rich book filled with insight on the artistic process of creating worlds and characters that only exist in our minds and bringing them to life, based on the lessons of the masters.

4. Directing the Story: Professional Storytelling & Storyboarding Techniques for Live Action & Animation
Covers the process of putting a story together by a professional film-maker and highly regarded teacher. A Comprehensive how-to textbook by one of the most highly regarded teachers in the field.

5 The Art Of... Books
Take your pick. For each major film in animation, Sci-Fi or fantasy there is generally a book released called "The Art Of... [insert film name]". Each book generally is light on word sand heavy on images. The images are a balance of sketches, paintings and other artworks that the designers of the film created to help the words of the script come to life in images. They are invaluable insight in to the design process. And also once you buy one...they are highly addictive!

This is, of course, just a starting list. You also need life drawing resources and information on how to use the specific tools you choose to create with. But the inspiration and basic artistic background for animation, gaming and comic art all stem from writing and constructing a good story and being able to bring it to visual life with style and these resources will help inspire and guide you towards that goal.
Inger loves stories and loves to write. She has been writing words on paper for quite some time so when the Internet came along she started writing online too. You can see her latest website which helps people to manage their digital tv reception at http://www.digitaltvreception.org/.

Collecting Original comic art – a fun and exciting hobby

By: Martin Toms
Word Count: 382

Comic art collecting has grown in stature since it’s humble beginnings in the 1970s. Comic books may still be viewed as entertainment for children but comic art has established itself as a distinct, mature art form that is able to move people with its appeal. And this artistic success has not weighed heavily on comic art; it retains the freshness and approachability which originally attracted millions to comic books. And this makes original comic art a true collectible item. While each piece of original comic art is one of a kind, many are inexpensive but some pieces rival the prices of the traditional art world.

If you have only seen comic art in comic books you may wonder what is meant by original comic art. The art you see in a comic book starts out as a hand drawn work that is typically penciled and inked. Historically then word bubbles added the dialogue to the page but most modern comics now do this electronically. This original, black and white drawing is copied, then colored and used to produce the comic books that you are familiar with. The original art is typically then returned to the artists, in beautiful black and white.

Comic books have been produced about everything from superheroes like Iron Man and Batman to horror to Disney characters to movie and toy tie-ins like the Transformers ensuring something for everyone. Just as diverse as the properties related to comic art there are just as many artistic styles that artists have adopted over time. One can enjoy viewing a wide variety of the art and when a drawing truly captivates a person, the person can look to add it to your collection.

One may be concerned that as with other art forms quality comic art is very expensive and starting an art collection is an indulgence that only a few can enjoy. However most original comic art is not expensive and one can acquire a piece for as little as $10.

As with other collectibles, there is a vibrant community that collects original comic art where you can enjoy interacting with like minded persons who have chosen to make their life richer by collecting this unique art form. You can learn more about comic art at www.sketchmaven.com.
Martin Toms has a long standing passion for original comic art. This passion is reflected in his commitment to the promotion of the art form by building a platform where lovers of comic art can meet. You can learn more about original comic art at www.sketchmaven.com www.sketchmaven.com.

Get Major Exposure - DRM Puts Music Biz at a Crossroads

By: Tammy Rose
Word Count: 587

To the music industry and the RIAA, Digital Rights Management, or DRM, is essential; the software protects artists and their copyrights from piracy. To hackers, it is just one more hurdle to clear before music becomes free. But for customers, DRM is a nuisance that forces legal downloader’s to clear the same hurdles their illegal counterparts must jump.

Without DRM, many artists would not sell their songs online. Either the Independent artists themselves would not trust their songs to haphazard download, or—far more likely—the recording companies that distribute the material would not put out albums if they can be easily pirated.

Apple’s iTunes employs DRM protection, and because the store sells the majority of legal downloads it is the biggest target of DRM-based complaining. Not only are pirates supposedly locked out, but also legal downloader’s are locked into using the iPod, since iTunes songs do not play on other MP3 players. iPods are also unable to play songs downloaded through most other services.

ITunes is important to the industry, because it is worth so much money. The flat $0.99/song plan is still in place, despite RIAA outcry, because the industry realizes it cannot be nearly as profitable without the top online marketplace.

Because the iPod is the best selling MP3 player, many would assume it is the best and that the player has something going for it that other players do not. In noting the dominance of the iPod and iTunes, it would be remiss to overlook somewhat of a chicken or the egg scenario: Would the iPod be as popular if iTunes music business could be played on other devices? Would iTunes be as popular if so many people did not already have an iPod, which could only play iTunes compatible songs?

Much like the chicken-egg dilemma, it is a difficult question to answer. The bottom line, however, is that DRM is giving Apple a significant competitive advantage over all of its competitors, and the shudder-inducing term monopoly is not far off. Due to an extreme lack of competition, Apple is able to engage in, shall I say, near-monopolistic price-fixing tendencies. Other companies are forced to either follow suit, in blind compliance, or twist in the wind.

Some nations, such as France, have proposed that DRM be cracked. Apple has decried the possibility as state-sponsored piracy, urging France to reconsider how it affects artists rights. Meanwhile, France maintains that eliminating DRM gives users more free choice.

There are, of course, ways to get around DRM. These typically involve burning a CD of legally purchased songs—which only play on one music player—and then ripping said CD into DRM-free MP3s. After all, every music player plays illegal MP3s.

Aside from the moral implications of obvious stealing, it somewhat defeats the purpose of purchasing music legally if you must effectively pirate your own music in order for it to work everywhere you want it to. I cannot, in good judgment, recommend stealing, but I also cannot believe that every song on every users iPod is legally purchased either.

The answer to the DRM dilemma is not simple, and the path the music industry analysis takes will either ensure its future success or cripple it. It is clear, however, that whether it chooses to fully embrace or fully cast off DRM, the industry must act fast.

Get Exposure - Carbon Cop-outs

By: Tammy Rose
Word Count: 539

Widespread success; virtually everyone craves it to get exposure some extent. When someone or something becomes a huge sensation there are many imitators. One need not look any further than the current American Idol phenomenon. The template has been set by this show for a plethora of talent search shows where there are three judges, one male, one female, and always one rude and critical British judge.

The concept of copying success stories is not necessarily a bad idea. America is supposedly founded on this concept of using others triumph as inspiration and a guideline of our own. While this may work fairly well in a music business setting copying does not work too well in the realm of creativity.

Even if a band is not trying to sound like anyone in particular it is only natural to describe their sound by comparing the band to well established groups. Some bands are simply waved off as being just another (fill in with choice of popular band) knockoff. This is label is one of the top things a band should avoid. You DO NOT want to be thought of as a lesser version of an existing band.

Bands especially do not want to describe themselves as sounding like another band. This preconception could ruin the first impression that a listener has of the music business. Best to leave the comparisons up to the listener if one must be made. A pet peeve of mine and others is the sounds like section on Myspace.com. Many groups list the bands they think they sound like, but then when listened to the group sounds nothing like they say they do. Of course sometimes the band does sound like who they mention, but this just shows lack of creativity and originality on the part of the band. Although a straightforward tell-it-like-it-is approach is usually preferable to the goofy overly wordy and under poetic sounds like descriptions that some bands give.

If your group is trying to sound like a certain successful band, then you are missing the point. Music is creativity. Successful bands are original. If someone wants to listen to U2 they are going to listen to the actual band and not some imitation. Do not be afraid to be different. The slight initial advantages of sounding like another group are not even comparable to the overwhelming success that can be had by being original and sticking to your vision of what music is, no matter how unorthodox it may seem in the beginning. Do not tell yourself that it can’t be done, because it has. I could never have imagined a genre of music called noise where bands sell records composed of little more than erratic static and feedback, but it is out there. If you are in music for the money then you are in the wrong industry. UK graffiti independent artist Banks says it best: Any fame is a by-product of making something that means something. You don't go to a restaurant and order a meal because you want to have a shit. Creativity should not be sacrificed for success. If you are creative first, success and fame will then follow.

6 Secrets For Learning Guitar Chords

By: Frank David
Word Count: 610

Two pieces of knowledge are essential to learn how to play guitar chords: what a chord is and how a chord is put together.

When played on a guitar, a set of tones that combine to create a melody are called a chord. Chords can be produced using a strumming or plucking method, and the chords can be comprised of different notes played one string at a time. Chords can use two, three, or even more notes. One note can also be considered a chord.

Two kinds of chords exist: major and minor. The acronym CAGED can help us remember the primary chords: C, A, G, E, and D. As a beginner at the guitar, understanding and mastering this chord progression is a very critical first step to take. Many guitar players who have mastered these say that this makes it much easier to learn and perform other chords later on.

Diagrams and How to Read Them

The next part you need to learn in order to play chords is how to read a chord chart or diagram. If you don't have these skills it will be difficult to play.

These chord diagrams illustrate exactly how to execute any given chord. If you want to play chords successfully and master the guitar, these diagrams should clearly express each chord, and you'll need to be able to accurately interpret these diagrams into positions for your fingers.

Using the CAGED chords

Picture yourself observing a guitar. Think about what the frets look like. There are six strings attached to a fret board, and that is what it is made up of. These are attached to the top and bottom of the fret board. With these strings, you'll be creating melody and chords. It's not a bad idea to memorize the chords that each fret can create, if you want to learn fingering before moving on. Playing more difficult chords will be much easier once you have mastered the five easier, basic chords.

Troubleshooting

What many people don't realize is that when you start out on the guitar, you will end up with fingers that are quite sore. You are not practicing correctly if you are a beginner guitarist without sore fingers. The strings must be pressed upon with force in order to finger the strings correctly. You need to press the guitar strings even harder if you hear a strange echo or buzzing while you are playing.

Some Tips

1. Cut your fingernails. Long fingernails can interfere with being able to press the strings, and this will just make things more difficult when you are first learning.

2. Keep your fingers arched as you play. Flat fingers will cause important strings to become muted. Many people that are new to the guitar make this error.

3. Use the tips of your fingers when playing, and not the pads of your fingers, which is another common mistake. Keep the arch straight. This can be tiring and rather painful at first, but once you develop callouses it will be worth it.

4) Press all of the notes together. Don't forget any of the strings or the sound won't be correct.

5. Spend time practicing. Take the time to memorize each pattern of chords.

6) Be patient with yourself. When you rush, you'll comprehend less and the whole experience will become more frustrating. Initially, find songs that are simply to play.

How an Artist can build a Sustainable Business without a Record Company in 2010

By: Craig Deborba
Word Count: 1242

Few would argue that back in the day, the Record Companies were the gatekeepers between the artists and their audience.

Now its very easy and relatively inexpensive for an artist to record and produce a record independently, secure independent distribution channels or distribute their music electronically online.

Before, even if you wanted your CD displayed in Record Stores, you had to have a record company. Sure, the company paid you a big advance. But then they would bill you for production, distribution, and marketing costs along with their sometimes questionable accounting methods.

Then after all was said and done sometimes the CDs might not even be stocked in the stores.

But those days are gone, and here we are in 2010 and the Internet and its possibilities are ever expanding.

Because of the internet, the distribution channel is closing. Today an independent artist can go direct to the fan to sell their CDs, DVD, T-shirts, and all other merchandise. This enables the Artist to continually market to that consumer, which is the opposite of traditional distribution lines, where the Artist never knew who purchased their music and could never follow up with them in the future.

Today with the right marketing system in place the artist can market directly to their buyers for the lifetime of that fan or the lifetime of that particular artist. So why is that few people have such a system in place. Even those that sell products directly from their website do not have systems set up for follow up and future marketing.

The concept of list building, auto-responders, giveaways, launch campaigns, squeeze pages, and content driven sales is a foreign language to most outside the Internet Marketing scene.

But this is the model that has been around for a long time with other businesses, it is the standard for selling information products, and now we are just starting to see it emerge with Real Estate Agents, Writers, Photographers, and now with Musicians.

Providing there is talent and a good product, this is going to create a whole new model for launching a successful music career that is far from the traditions of the industry. Where the independent artist who embraces the internet with an open mind and determination will make a much better living than they could ever hope to make working for someone else, or by using an agent or distributing their music through traditional channels, and this includes ITunes.

So, what about continuing sources of income?

As with the release of any new product, CD sales peak around the release and then start to drop off. Then the artist does promotion and makes money on concerts and the selling of the merchandise at shows. But, what about expanding your business model to include a continual revenue stream, that is not based on CD sales or shows.

Welcome to the Members Area

Membership sites are becoming really popular for their continual income stream and can range from online fitness training, Yoga, instructional, and just about anything you could imagine.

In the music world artists such as Kiss (the Kiss army) Green Day (Idiot club), Mathew Ebel, Terri Clark, and others have tied in Membership Areas into their websites, and they have been very successful. Why do they work? Because, the thing that fans want more of is YOU!

Lets say for example you have 1,000 fans and they each pay only $120 yr. for access to your membership site or Exclusive Fan Club, thats $120,000 yr. (1,000 fans x $120 = $120,000), or 500 fans at $100 yr is $50,000. You can adjust your price point depending on what youre offering and how many fans you have, potentially making in the hundreds of thousands. You could make enough to fund your next record, pay back investors, or do music full-time so you do not have to work the day job anymore.

Imagine if you have more fans, you could charge less and still make a really good living. With low overhead the artist can really profit.

You could also offer your new CD for free to those who purchase a membership; this is the model that Prince used years ago where every concert ticket purchased came with a free CD and they were counted as record sales. This applied the concept of the giveaway that I mentioned earlier.

The only catch with a membership site is its up to you to provide valuable content to engage the fans and give them something nobody else is getting that makes them feel special. You could have a behind the scenes blog, early access to discount tickets, never seen before footage, un-released tracks, interviews, special merchandise, etc.

When utilized correctly this direct communication line allows you to: learn what your fans need or want, become more real to them as you give them a glimpse into your life, and develops a stronger more direct communication line, something every die-hard fan desires. And in exchange you make a really good living whether your releasing a CD or not.

Now, here is where it really gets cool.

If you have other products like a clothing-line, make-up line, photography, guitar lessons, artwork, you can tie this in with the ability to cross-promote those other product lines directly to your fan base. And for those Musicians, who really have it together, they will form JV (Joint Venture) Partnerships and now the possibilities of having a booming sustainable business are endless.

The key to success is setting it up, understanding your fans, and being creative about how you deliver value to them. Another key is the Musician getting out of the mind-set of how things traditionally have been done, embracing the internet, and being able to foresee where we are moving with technology, as a society, and the benefits this will bring to them as an artist.

Established busy Musicians that are not too internet savvy, with a large fan base, will also need to consider having a fan manager someone to manage the database, HTML Newsletters, and more. Keeping the fans engaged and that part of your business organized will become an important role as direct marketing to them becomes a powerful income stream.

Now, obviously I have not gone into the details of launching such a site or setting up the proper marketing system successfully, but its really not that difficult if you know what your doing and compared to the benefits its well worth it, but thats a whole other post.

As marketing methods become more content based and industries continue to tighten, I think were going to see much more of this from musicians who want a real business that is not solely based on them scoring the big deal but based more on having a good business.

The future of the music industry is online and it is in the branding. Just having a website is no longer enough, it is now about building a community within your business. The Independent Artist will need to embrace internet marketing or they will struggle to survive.

Communication lines are expanding and effective marketing methods are changing. What worked one or two years ago will not work well today.

The Music Industry is changing, our World is changing, and there will be those who watch things happen, those that make things happen, and those who wonder what happened.

Motivational Songs, more than just music

By: Jonathan Washington
Word Count: 891

As early as I can remember, motivational songs have always been a big part of my life. Looking back, I can recall all those hours as a child that I would spend singing and listening to everything, though...There are so many great memories of the whole family dancing around while Father played the guitar...Sister and I would have such a jolly good time while records played on the Hi-Fi...From Patsy Cline to Toots and the Maytals, we would listen to music of all types really.

We even got into show tunes especially the songs from the popular Disney films. "Whistle while you work," and "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down," or "You can fly, you can fly, you can fly," just to name a few, were different from the rest. The lyrics and the rhythms together, gave you that "you can do anything" sort of feeling.

I can also remember after seeing movies from the "Star Wars" trilogy and how the the music would stay with me so much so that when I left there, I would be so charged that I thought I could take on the world! "Get outta my way, bad guy. You can't stop me!" Those strong symphonic movements gave me the strength in my posture, the pep in my step, and that burning desire to move past all of those obstacles in life that ever distracted me and impeded my progress. Talk about powerful!

This type of music was different to me than the other songs I had heard on the radio. They were about much more than love and it's tribulations. These songs gave me energy to be bold, strong, smart, and productive...To move mountains, take control, and change the world.

Motivational songs is what I like to call them, and they are so important because they do motivate, are self and life-affirming, and inspire you to move forward in life. Listening to several of them is like having a meal high in protein without any calories...or a drug without any side effects...Or better yet, petroleum with no emissions. You get the idea.

I am referring to motivational songs that stimulate in the most wholesome way, of course. However, there are quite a few that I find do just the opposite. They make me want to stay focused on crazy things like unrequited love, and suggest that I should care less about life and forget that I'm a lady...bad stuff. But, here's the problem. Those tunes can be quite catchy. Those infectious hooks and melodies would play in my head over and over like a broken record resulting in all this negative imagery penetrating my consciousness and influencing my thought process. Not good!

Like Notorious B.I.G.'s song "Everyday Struggle" from the Ready to Die album. "I don't want to live no more. Sometimes I hear death knockin' at my front door." Biggie's music became the soundtrack of an era for us urban generation Xers, while his lyrics became the mantras for his own life. In fact, just three years later, when he was finishing up his second album Life after Death, Christopher Wallace was gunned down in Los Angeles, and the album and all the money he made had a long life after his untimely death.

Bottom line - music is motivational for the good and bad. Sure we've heard about extreme cases where perpetrators were so heavily under the influence of their own toxic mix of what they considered to be motivational songs, that they went out and committed heinous crimes like the "Helter Skelter" murders lead by Charles Manson. Or even the story about the former L.A. gang member and convicted killer, Monster Cody, who would listen to popular gangster rap music like Tupac's "Hit 'Em Up" before he would go out and commit his own unspeakable acts.

But by and large, we hear more about all the good things music is good for, e.g. its therapeutic qualities. Many hospitals now across the country use music therapy to help "motivate" the healing process in their patients - case in point, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. They use music as part of their cardiovascular surgery healing program to "promote relaxation and reduce tension, stress and anxiety." They find that music helps these patients to relax as it decreases their pain, improves their moods and helps them to sleep better, especially during the recovery period. Now that's what I'm talking about!

So, to conclude, I'm saying nothing that hasn't been written or said before. In fact, Samuel Johnson, English author of the eighteenth century, once said that "Music is the only sensual pleasure without vice." I concur while acknowledging the exceptions, and will continue to be motivated and inspired by music and dedicate my life working to help people harness its power to improve their own lives.

Music Business - The Internet a River, Not a Highway

By: Josh Coe
Word Count: 984

The Tech Currents That Bring Adult Video Streaming your Way

Music Business - While the future holds the promise of total convergence of media and delivery systems, most adult webmasters are still playing catch up with industry leaders like Vivid, which recently added a download-to-DVD option to its independent artist website. For the stragglers, though, the future is now. They need to jump into the Internet River of streaming media, and right now.

Stepping into the stream

The first step of music business is to rip the DVD onto a computers hard drive. What we do, without the use of any off-the-shelf software, but for the average webmaster there are tons of ripping programs, some free and some not. Windows programs Flask MPEG and MPEG Mediator are free; free applications for Macintosh include Mac the Ripper and Handbrake. Other ripping programs, for both operating systems as well as Linux, vary in price and sophistication, cost from $10 to perhaps $100 and offer an increasing assortment of options as one moves up the price ladder.

Most webmasters will break the movie into clips, either as scenes or chapters like the original DVD or small 10- to 30-second clips for promotional content. This clipping work can be handled by single-purpose applications - We says that a popular one for chopping up video is Virtual Dub, freeware for Windows - but well-heeled webmasters, like most encoding firms, will use one high-end package for both clipping and editing tasks.

Next comes editing, meaning final editing like inserting watermarks, deleting scenes, etc., at the producers direction. There is lots of software out there. The most popular Windows program is probably Adobe Premiere, definitely not free, followed by Sony Vegas. Adobe Premiere is also available for Macintosh, but takes a second seat to Apples Final Cut Pro. A Google search will unearth many freeware (no-cost) or shareware (low-cost) applications for every computing environment, some of which are surprisingly powerful for the price.

Squeezing those pixels

Now the do-it-yourself webmaster is at a crucial step: encoding. Uptime Video and get exposure music, of course, stays on the cutting edge of hardware, uses custom-made applications and processes jobs in ways that are unlikely to be duplicated by even the most talented Web site proprietors working alone. But everyone has to start somewhere, and even using today off-the-shelf computers with freeware programs can yield decent, sometimes very good, results.

Webmasters must first decide how many formats to produce for streaming. For Uptime Videos clients, we make sure we understand how and where they plan to use their content. For most webmasters, .wmv is the most popular format, followed by .mpg. While .mpg is an older, muddier codes, it is playable through almost all popular media players. Flash video is gaining major momentum for this reason, because regardless of the computer, most browsers have the Flash player installed.

Still, a variety of other formats and codes are being used daily: Real Video, Quick-Time, various flavors of .mpg, .avi and so on. Beginners may find it easier to use dedicated encoders that specialize in creating one format well - Windows Media Encoder for .wmv, Quick-Time Pro for Quick-Time, Flash Video Encoder for Flash video - while more experienced hands (reaching into deeper pockets) can use software bundles like Sorensen Squeeze or Video Charge. With these, users can encode to multiple formats through one piece of software and one interface.

Webmasters need to remember the end-users, too. One Hollywood recording studio spent hundreds of hours perfecting a Web site with Flash motion graphics, audio/video clips and live chat capabilities, all in the mistaken belief that most people have high-speed net connections. The site may have succeeded in South Korea, where about 75 percent of net users have broadband, but the studio owners made their site nearly inaccessible to the seven of every ten American Web surfers still using dial-up connections.

Tomorrow is coming fast

Major content distributors of all kinds still provide low-bandwidth streams to serve all the 56k modems out there. But if the future is now for those webmasters lagging behind Vivid (as many always will), the future for Vivid and other adult content kings is approaching like an onrushing train.

We are already seeing a major shift to flash video because of the flexibility and inherent benefits, and mainstream happens to be ahead of adult in this transition. The video veteran also sees major and widespread implementation of High-Definition (HD) video as well, beginning with the h.264 codes now being used for the newest Apple video Ipods.

We will see more implementations of the h.264 codes in other formats like Windows, including new derivatives and even multi-threaded codes that surpass h.264. Naturally, the proliferation of HD video, coupled with the release of new HD-DVD players, will fuel the continued development of HD encoding, as well as fulfill the need for better compression quality.

Video clips are now being delivered to cell phones, too. But a recent survey by NDP Research indicates the marketing challenge that content creators and distributors face with cell phone delivery (and every other new destination): only 28 percent of cell phones currently in use can handle video streams, and an infinitesimal 1 percent of users currently pay for the service.

Of course, this is just another challenge in a long list of challenges that the envelope-pushing, technology-driving, paradigm-shifting adult entertainment in music industry analyzer has successfully met. And if past successes are any indication, high-quality content deliveries should grow from a stream to a tidal wave in no time.

Independent Artist Website - Sound Decisions about Studio Recording

By: Greg Joes
Word Count: 1032

Now that you have had a general introduction to recording, specifically for tracking a live show, this Independent Artist Website will give you an overview of studio recording, from the usual rent-a-pro approach to setting up your own project studio.

First things first: You have to decide who is going to be the producer, even before deciding on the engineer. None of the later decisions about tracking instruments, recording vocals, doing overdubs, processing signals, or getting a final mix will mean Bo Diddley, to coin a phrase, if your bands three or five or eight members are arguing all the time about who sounds the loudest and what so-and-so’s girlfriend is doing in the vocal booth. Someone has to run the show.

This is even true for a solo act in independent artist, since in a studio leadership vacuum most seasoned (or semi-seasoned, or even just salty) engineers will step right up and make the decisions for you. If the band does not present a united front behind its leader, the whole process will be at risk. So, before anything else, decide

• Who will be the producer?
• What arrangements of what songs will be recorded?
• How much debate and democracy will be involved in the process,
• When the various deadlines are going to be set, and
• Why things are going to be run them way they are.

Now is the time for clarity, group cohesion, and common goals. Larger-than-life egos and delusional daydreams have to be left at the door (better yet, down the street) so that a workable, affordable, efficient, and effective plan can be developed — and pursued to a successful conclusion. Everybody needs to get on the same page (or play the same tune, or whatever metaphor you prefer). Now you are as ready as you are going to be, so what is next?

Well, as usual, it is about money, mostly, and time, too. What is the working budget? Can you afford (and do you want to afford) to go into a project-level studio at $30 an hour with engineer included? A pro studio at $50-100 an hour with engineer maybe included? To make these calculations, you need to have your songs down pat, know how you are going to record them (rhythm section together or dubbed) and how long all of it will take. If you are doing a three-song played that is one thing; if you are doing your debut CD with 11 tracks that is a whole other thing. For simplicity is sake, and to keep consistent examples from here forward, let’s go with your demo for now.

The whole decision process can take a U-turn if one of the band members, or a good (really good) friend, has a decent project studio set up — meaning pro and semi-pro equipment, a decent recording room, good microphones (and cables!), and so on. So, this is the second big decision, after choosing the producer, but it is not one that the newly christened producer should make alone. Once again, unanimity is vital.

Wherever you do the sonic deeds, if you are recording your drummer and bassist (and maybe a guitar or keyboard too) as a unit, which imparts an organic feel to the tunes, then you will need baffles, sound deflectors, etc., to minimize bleed. You will have to have headphones for everyone, good mics that are properly placed, quality cabling to minimize hum and pops, and so forth. If this is all starting to sound awfully complicated, opt for the best mid-level project studio in town, the one with good equipment and a decent studio, if not state-of-the-art. We were doing your demo, remember? Not your platinum-worthy debut.

Classical Guitar Practice Tips: Letting Go of Intrusive Thoughts

By: Emre Sabuncuogl
Word Count: 421

Two of the biggest roadblocks to progress in playing the classical guitar are intrusive thoughts: negative self-talk and random mental chatter. These distracting thoughts seem to pop into your head despite your best intentions.

Negative self-talk is the collection of put-downs that form inside of your head when you are experiencing a roadblock in your practice session, or perhaps after a mistake during a performance. Mental chatter often intrudes during practice, especially when you must perform a repetitive task which bores you, perhaps a scale or fingering which you must do over many times in order to master.

To have a productive practice session with your classical guitar, become aware of these all-too-human tendencies, and learn how to let go of the internal chatter and the self-criticism. When you notice that you are talking to yourself too much, let go of that inner voice which interrupts your session with random thoughts, then turn your attention back to your music.

Employ frequent breaks, especially when repetitive work becomes boring. During performances and challenging practice sessions, foster an attitude of acceptance. Avoid labeling your work "good" or "bad." If your playing is going well, leave it as it is; if you are having difficulties, make the necessary changes without self-condemnation. Take the time to affirm yourself, remembering your accomplishments.

With this calm approach, you will be able to perceive your playing in a more realistic frame of mind--and thus evaluate it in perspective. Moreover, you will allow your body and your mind to function freely and naturally. Dropping needless mental chatter helps to develop a calm, noncritical awareness of your playing. Even when you become aware of the chatter, however, it can be difficult to overcome. Techniques which boost focus, such as deep breathing, can be very helpful for reducing such "mental noise."

Exercise, adequate hydration, proper nutrition, as well as adequate amounts of sleep each night contribute much to your brain's health. Paying attention to those lifestyle choices can make the difference between a wandering mind and a focused one.

As you master your tendency to let your mind wander during times of stress or boredom, you will find that both practice and performance will become more productive in less time. These habits will soon become second nature and pay off big dividends in improvement in your technique and artistry on the classical guitar.

Improving your Guitar Speed

By: Andrew Lee
Word Count: 585

One of the most interesting things for people who would like to learn how to play the guitar is speed. Most beginners are motivated by the interest and the desire to play fast guitar as soon as possible. And it can be pretty frustrating to be able to get faster in playing the guitar. True enough; speed is not something that is as easy as making peanut butter sandwiches. However, it is possible to learn how to play with speed and better technique with your guitar.

Improving your speed comes with a great deal of practice. You also need to learn a technique you are comfortable with to help you improve your picking speed. You can start with an easy guitar song to practice with. Then use a metronome to help you keep a constant and stable beat. As you go along, increase the tempo on the metronome and try to catch up with the beat. You can move on with more difficult riffs and practice with a metronome. If you are wondering why you need a metronome to practice, the answer is you need to make sure that you are following a constant and stable beat. There are chances when you can go too fat or too slow. This will not be able to help you keep the proper rhythm with the song.

Properly Changing your Guitar Strings

For beginner guitar players, it can be pretty difficult to change your guitar strings. Any guitar player will experience snapping of strings at one point in their guitar playing lives. And for someone, like you, who is just starting out with your guitar playing career, it can be pretty uncomfortable to change your strings.

Changing your guitar strings is really simple and should be part of your guitar care routine. This means your strings should be changed regularly. There are a few things that you should take note of when changing guitar strings.

First thing that you should check is the direction the tuning key is turned to loosen or tighten a string. Most of the time, for right-handed guitar players, turning the tuning keys clockwise tightens the strings. And of course, turning the tuning keys counter clockwise loosens them. Naturally, when you tighten the strings, the pitch goes higher. When you loosen the strings, the pitch lowers.

Check how the strings are aligned from the nut to your guitar’s bridge. And see which string goes where. It is best to make sure that you know the arrangement of the strings and how they are aligned and attached to the guitar. Making mental notes about these things will surely help make the job a lot easier for you. It will surely free you from any confusion especially after you’ve taken out all the strings from your guitar. This will surely make it a lot easier for you to manage. You will also notice that you will be able to restring your guitar faster.

You might need a wire cutter to cut out the excess string hanging from your guitar. Especially for those who use acoustic guitars and electric guitars, it can be pretty risky to have your strings poking out of the guitar’s head. So you might want to cut them off if you don’t want to have the entire length of the strings wound in the tuning pegs.

The only difficult part about the whole process is turning the tuning keys. It can take a while to unwind the string and take it out. And it can take a number of turns before the string gets wound onto the peg. Patience is a must in these parts of the process. And make sure that you support the string as you wind it onto the peg. You might wind it to tight that it gets misaligned to the bridge. You also have to make sure that it doesn’t get tangled with the other strings.

Changing your guitar strings need some time and practice to perfect. This should be part of your guitar maintenance routine as it is important that you maintain a quality sound with your guitar. It will be a big help if you are able to employ the help of an experienced guitar player to assist you especially on your first time with changing guitar strings. The guidance will be much needed in order for you to familiarize yourself with the different parts of the guitars and as well as the process of changing the strings as well.
